Growing up in the 1980s Chesterfield wasn't an occupation for the faint-hearted.

Neil Anderson survived to tell the tale. His ‘Dirty Stop Out's Guide to 1980s Chesterfield’ tells the story of a town with a nightlife culture that thrived in the face of the Miners' Strike; had its own top twenty action courtesy of the Thompson Twins and was home to the Painted Wagon, one of the most notorious alcohol-fuelled battlegrounds in Northern England.

From the first faltering steps on the dance floor of the AGD or Grammar Disco, it was all downhill via the perilous Adam & Eve; the subterranean Fascination; the out of town Aquarius and the glitz of the Moulin Rouge.

We might have been staring Cold War Armageddon in the face, but there was always an attempt at the Brampton Mile, a chance to survive a night at the Painted Wagon or the festive aftermath of a Christmas Eve all-dayer to keep your mind off things.

Chesterfield was arguably at its most vocal in the 1980s - not least represented by the dulcet tones of Brian the Singing Miner who proved true talent could shine through even years before the X-Factor.

Unemployment might have been sky high and the Miners' Strike splitting entire communities, but we proved we could all rally round for the visit of Charles and Di in 1981.

Chesterfield even claimed its own piece of Top Twenty action thanks to the Thompson Twins whilst homegrown bands spanning the Septic Psychos to Stateline brought up the rear.

Ground-breaking gigs at the start of the decade at the Fusion saw everyone from the Cure to the Specials play seminal shows in the town.

The nightlife of Chez Vegas in the 1980s might not quite have been up there with New York's Studio 54 but with a spire that looked as though it was at one with the devil-cursed 'loony juice' they served at Brampton's Three Horse Shoes, our partying ability was up there with the best.

This guide book will be the perfect gift for anyone that remembers this amazing era.
