Inspired by Geoffrey Beattie's landmark 1986 book 'Survivors of Steel City', author and social historian Neil Anderson has spent more than a year interviewing some of the most remarkable people Sheffield has produced.

From internationally acclaimed musicians, artists and sporting champions to pioneering entrepreneurs, business leaders and the people who helped rebuild the city, 'Steel City Survivors' brings together their extraordinary stories in one landmark publication.

Through their own words, discover the setbacks, struggles, unexpected opportunities and remarkable achievements that helped transform Sheffield over more than four turbulent decades.

Featuring interviews with Richard Hawley, Pete McKee, Nick Banks, Johnny Nelson, Kevin McCabe and many more, this richly illustrated book celebrates the people who refused to accept that Sheffield's greatest days were behind it.

Some became household names. Others quietly built businesses, created jobs, transformed neighbourhoods and helped shape the Sheffield we know today.

But together, they tell a remarkable story of reinvention.

A book with a purpose

'Steel City Survivors' began with a conversation between Neil Anderson and Sheffield businessman David Slater at The Library, the former Attercliffe public library that David helped bring back to life.

The project has been generously funded by David, with all profits from the book going to Roundabout.

Roundabout supports young people in South Yorkshire who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, helping them find somewhere safe to live and build more secure futures.
