This book has already been featured everywhere from the Coventry Telegraph to the BBC.

Author Ruth Cherrington said: "So much has been written about the city down the years but nothing has ever covered the thriving Working Men's Club movement that used to be central to the lives of so many people - mine included.

"My book celebrates the lost clubland of Coventry and I'm so grateful to the scores of people that have contributed. These amazing years will never be repeated and it has been my life's ambition to ensure they are never forgotten!"

About the book:

Not even her Maj’ could resist visiting one of the city’s numerous venues in their ‘70s heyday! She toured Coventry Working Men’s Club and then, not to be outdone, Princess Margaret was spotted in Willenhall Social.

No wonder Coventry was called the Queen of Clubs city! These amazing venues provided year-round recreation with the city’s games league growing to become the largest in the country. A Lime Tree Social club grandad hit the national headlines for defeating then world snooker champion Steve Davis and Radford Social had a “supergran” darts ace!

Children counted down the days until the Christmas parties and pantos whilst the club trip was underlined in everyone’s diary. Everything stopped for the bingo and regular raffles raised tens of thousands for charity. There was entertainment galore in luxurious concert rooms with top local and international acts. Though they had to impress Coventry’s entertainment secretaries first – they were renowned as a tough bunch to impress. Decades on from their seventies heyday – clubs fought for their very survival against the backdrop of the city’s decimated car industry.
Though many have been lost, the stories of their popularity are as fresh as they ever were with scores of them captured here for the first time.

  • Guaranteed to bring the memories flooding back!
  • Packed with scores of photos, rare memorabilia and more
  • The perfect gift for anyone that remembers the heyday of Coventry's Working Men's Clubs
  • A fascinating nostalgia trip.
